Department of Philosophy
Unlike specialised studies, philosophy as a science is not limited to specific areas and only partially relies on established methods. It seeks to explore the foundations and scope of discursive knowledge, meaning, and the formation of intentions, systematically employing alternative methods from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Reflection on these methods is an essential aspect of philosophical work, making references to the history of philosophy indispensable. Factual-systematic and historical-critical approaches complement and enrich each other.
Central Idea
Philosophy graduates should be equipped to approach complex theoretical or practical decision-making situations in a reflective and analytical way. This is reflected in the systematic and historical emphasis placed on the micro-modules of the bachelor's and master's degree courses in Philosophy.
Career Orientation
Philosophy can lead to a wide variety of career paths. There is a strong demand for philosophy teachers across Germany, particularly in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where philosophy is taught in all schools from year 5 onwards.
Other, though more limited, opportunities include roles as university lecturers, running philosophical practices, and working at or for evening schools, academies, and similar institutions. In addition to traditional career fields such as media, politics and cultural management, new professional opportunities have emerged for philosophy graduates, particularly in ethical counselling and in overseeing the ethical aspects of science, business and politics. Further career prospects include public relations roles within companies, associations, and institutions, as well as management consultancy.
Structure of the Department
The Department of Philosophy has three established chairs, one each in the core areas of practical philosophy, theoretical philosophy, and philosophy with a focus on aesthetics and cultural philosophy. Furthermore, the professorship for environmental ethics, which was created as part of the Landscape Ecology and Nature Conservation degree programme within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, is affiliated to the Department of Philosophy.
